"One of New York City's great meat-and-potatoes indie-rock bands of the '90s, Versus spawned a bunch of other Teenbeat bands, including +/- {PLUS/MINUS} (with James Baluyut and Patrick Ramos, occasionally alongside members of True Love Always or Tuscadero), The Fontaine Toups (bassist Toups's band), and the Pacific Ocean (with Ed Baluyut). Dead Leaves is technically a singles-and-comp-tracks collection, but it's actually more or less their first demo tape, from 1992 - the era in which they were working out their fascination with Mission of Burma, discovering how singer/guitarist Richard Baluyut's voice could mesh and contrast with Toups's, and writing haunting, stinging songs like 'Tin Foil Star' and 'Forest Fire' that would become their standards."
