ET CETERA

Our Teen-Beat re-issue includes both remastered mixes of all the songs, but also the original mixes dubbed from the original cassette (which comes with free extra hiss).

Originally released on cassette by Robert Schipul's own Starlet Records, White Swan Drive, New Milford, Connecticut. Original catalogue number: Starlet Records 03.

"Spittle" contains as sample from "Rotate" by Land of the Loops.

"January" was originally (or later?) titled "Pool of Ice".

"Piano Sucks" was originally (or later?) titled "Asshole (Piano Player)".

RECORDING NOTES

Fall of 1994 was the beginning of my freshman year at public high school. Having just survived the wasteland that is otherwise known as "middle-school", I was going through all that angsty teenage navel-gazing that normal teenagers go through. I was also experiencing musical sounds that I had never heard of before. A little college station, WXCI in Danbury, CT, was turning me on to amazing bands and I was quickly becoming obsessed with the holy triumvirate of 4AD, Sub Pop and Teenbeat Records - more specifically, His Name is Alive, Velocity Girl and Unrest. Little did I know that all three bands were Six-Degrees-of-Kevin Bacon-connected through the indie rock mini-universe.

At that time, Unrest's Isabel Bishop EP was on the playlist at WXCI. I used to tape songs off the radio and make multiple requests by throwing my voice so that I could hear as much by Unrest as possible. "Teenage Suicide" was a particularly memorable request as the DJ announced it by saying "I really hope I am not fulfilling this guy's suicide by playing this". The music was jangly, poppy and the fastest guitar-playing I had ever heard, with twisted and morose lyrics. I was in love. It spoke to me.

Also around this time, I was starting to write my first tunes. I had plunked melodies out on the keyboard before but I was now beginning to find my voice (although my actual voice was still a trainwreck as evidenced on these recordings). I cobbled together some music with the help from an older friend with a 4-track, and sent it to a handful of labels (I believe the three mentioned above). Not expecting much, I couldn't believe it when I got a note back from Mark Robinson - Mr. Unrest himself - telling me he was interested in putting something out on his label. I felt like I had become a rock star and brought that note with me everywhere for the following year. You now are holding a replica of that original demo that Mr. Robinson took a chance on - none of these recordings have surfaced elsewhere. And it might just take you back to your freshman year of high school hell too.
