ET CETERA

This album is a No.6 Records release that was manufactured and distributed by Teen-Beat. The exterior of the package has no Teen-Beat logo or catalogue number printed on it.

The band Cagney & Lacee consists of Dean Wareham and his first wife Claudia Silver.

The Unrest tracks on this compendium are from a pair of singles that were not released. The band proposed two singles, each with the same A-side, but vocals performed by a different singer. No.6 rejected the idea and the records were not released.

The catalogue number KAR-006 was intentionally skipped in the early days of the label, but was used for this post-humous compendium.

THANK YOU

RECORDING NOTES

I had no intention of ever starting a label of my own. In 1988, I had been working as a salesmen and buyer at the U.S. arm of Virgin Records called Caroline. They had started their own label and had been having quite a good run with the debut Suicidal Tendencies LP. I had already done a compilation album called "God's Favorite Dog" between Butthole Surfer projects while I was working for Touch and Go in Detroit. One day Thurston Moore brought me a tape of a new compilation that his band, Sonic Youth, had contributed to called "Fast and Bulbous". It was a tribute to Captain Beefheart's music. I had been in touch with Don Van Vliet for about a year at that point. I hated the record and, after I sent Don a copy, he was disgusted by it too.

I have been a lifelong Neil young fan. At that time in his career, it was kinda hard to be a Neil young fan. Records like "Landing On Water, "Trans", "Old Ways" and "Neil With The Shocking Pinks" didn't make it any easier. I was worried that someone would do a really bad job on a similar concept for him and so the idea for "The Bridge: A Tribute To Neil Young" just formed in my mind. I new many bands held him in high regard and I knew most of them. I started making a few phone calls and by the end of the week I had the core of the performers lined up. Nobody that I asked said "no". I gave each band $500 to record one of his tunes. I knew from various interviews that two of Neil's kids were suffering from cerebral palsy. I myself had a close cousin who suffer from it as well. I told all of the groups that all of their royalties would go to the new school that he and his wife Pegi had started up to help children like theirs. The project fell together real fast and was completed and ready for release just about four months later.

After working with labels like Homestead, Touch and Go, and 99 and helping out with the mechanics of pressing plants and promoters for Caroline, I had amassed more experience then I was even aware of. After its release my prole was raised and I was offered an A&R job at the U.S. arm of England's Rough Trade Records. I signed on with the provision that they would press and distribute the continuation of what was now No.6 Records. The name came from a UK television series that had been shown in the U.S. only once when I was about 12 years old. It had been repeated briefly again on public television again in mid-1970's when I was a bit more able to appreciate its subtexts.

The label's catalog numbers are prexed by "KAR" which I took from the lead character's license plate. In the series, the main character is abducted by a sinister unnamed government agency because he wants to get out of the spy game. He is gassed and whisked away to a remote location (called "The Village") populated by similar characters. There they use various methods to nd out why he quit.

Everyone has their name taken away and replaced by a number. The lead character was given the number six. He plays as many mind games with them as they try on him. He never gets to meet with No.1 and that gure remains an enigma throughout the series. He only gets as far as dealing with the ever revolving people that ll No.2's shoes. Each are replaced as they consistently fail to nd out No.6's "secret". That's why there is no catalog number KAR-001 in the discography. Seemed like a good idea at the time.

- Terry Tolkin, 2009.
